Air-to-water heat pumps

An air-to-water heat pump pulls heat from outdoor air and puts it into water. That water then heats your floors, radiators or fan coils, and can make your domestic hot water too. In summer the same unit can run in reverse and cool.

Is it a fit for your home?

It’s a strong fit if you:
– have, or are adding, in-floor radiant or hydronic radiators
– are replacing an old gas or oil boiler
– want one system for heat, cooling and hot water
– are building new or doing a major renovation

It’s a harder fit if you have high-temperature cast iron radiators sized for an 80°C boiler. Sometimes that works with a few changes. We’ll tell you straight after the heat loss calculation.

What we do

  1. Room-by-room heat loss calculation, so the unit is sized for your house and not a rule of thumb
  2. System design: heat pump, buffer tank, pumps, mixing and controls
  3. Install, fill, purge and commission, with a written start-up report
  4. Annual maintenance and repairs, on our installs and other people’s

Running costs

A heat pump makes heat at roughly two to three times the efficiency of electric baseboards or an electric boiler (NRCan). How much you save depends on what you’re replacing. We’ll give you a realistic estimate for your home, not a headline number.

Questions people ask

Will it keep up on the coldest days? Yes, if it’s sized for your local design temperature. We size every system to the house, and add a backup element where it makes sense.
What about outdoor unit noise? Modern monobloc units are quiet. We place them away from bedrooms and neighbours and set them on proper isolation pads.
My air-to-water system isn’t working well. Can you help? Yes. Many we see were never commissioned or the controls were left on factory settings. See service and maintenance.
